Championship leader Mercedes took a bold gamble by introducing a substantial aerodynamic update package for the W17 at Sepang. However, extracting the true potential of these new parts has turned into a major puzzle for the engineering squad.
George Russell admitted that because the team fitted the new parts to both cars, they were unable to run a direct back-to-back comparison with the previous specification to evaluate the gains accurately.
Kimi Antonelli salvaged fourth on the grid during qualifying, while Russell slotted in further down. The team struggled significantly with the abrasive asphalt and high track temperatures at Sepang, triggering behavior from the car that hadn't surfaced all year.

The extensive package features a revised floor, diffuser, and a completely new sidepod profile that required a total redesign of the internal cooling architecture, making it impossible to swap specs over a race weekend.
Team principal Toto Wolff conceded that the unusual traits caught them off guard on Friday, leaving the crew scrambling to unlock the full window of the W17's updated performance.
