Mercedes has finally unveiled its major upgrade package for the W17 at the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix. After a long wait since Canada, the current constructors' championship leaders are not resting on their laurels. They have changed seven areas of the car, including the floor and rear suspension.
Since the start of the season, the W17 has been the benchmark. However, Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull have been applying constant pressure. Now, Mercedes has responded with extensive revisions: almost all bodywork has been updated except the front and rear wings. The focus is clear: increase downforce and aerodynamic efficiency.
Upgrade Details: Floor and Suspension Under the Spotlight
Sky Sports F1 analyst Bernie Collins described the package as "a very ominous looking set of upgrades" for Mercedes. According to her, the changes start at the front floor area, including the floor fences, floor body, and floor sides. All aimed at directing airflow to the rear duct area. The sidepod also gets more downwash to improve flow to the rear suspension, whose fairings have also been upgraded. The goal: generate more downforce and load more efficiently across corner speeds.

“This Mercedes is really the one to beat this weekend,” Collins said. “All teams will be keeping a very close eye on the practice sessions to see how good these upgrades are.”
Russell: A Big Step, but Normal in Season Context
Driver George Russell admitted this is a big step. “We think it's a good step, purely because it's been so long since we last brought an upgrade. It's quite abnormal to have an upgrade back in May and then only again almost in October. So as an individual upgrade step, it's large, but in a normal season it's just sort of a normal trajectory,” he explained. Russell hopes this package propels them back to the front on circuits that have been challenging.
Russell arrives in Bahrain after winning in Azerbaijan, but he still trails his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 66 points in the drivers' standings. With this upgrade, he hopes to close the gap.
Impact on the Championship Battle
If the upgrade works as expected, Mercedes could extend their lead in the constructors' championship and give Russell a weapon to chase down Antonelli. However, if it fails, rival teams are ready to seize the momentum. The practice sessions in Bahrain will be a crucial early indicator.
One thing is clear: Mercedes is not standing still. They continue to develop the car despite dominating. This signals their intent to lock in the titles as soon as possible.
