The Brackley-based squad leaves the race weekend with lingering uncertainty regarding how much the newly introduced floor and bodywork updates have actually improved the pace of the car. Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord has openly addressed the conspicuous performance issues of the W17, admitting that the significant upgrades failed to deliver the anticipated results.
Following George Russell's imperious form at the preceding round in Azerbaijan, expectations heading into the Asian leg were high. However, the team quickly found themselves a shade resurgent behind Red Bull, who capitalized on pole and victory with Max Verstappen, while also locked in a fierce performance battle with Ferrari on an abrasive track surface.
The punishing track conditions were further exacerbated by scorching temperatures on Friday and Saturday, which categorically did not suit the characteristics of the W17 chassis. Torrential rain on Sunday threw a massive curveball into the race strategy, and while the eight-time constructors' champions looked poised to secure second and third places, late heartbreak struck when George Russell retired with only a handful of laps remaining.

This misfortune allowed Lewis Hamilton to round out the podium rostrum behind Kimi Antonelli. Analyzing the weekend, Lord noted that the interaction between the technical updates and environmental factors threw the car completely out of its normal operating window.
"The combination potentially of update, track temperature, and track surface caused an interaction—a set of behaviours—that meant the car was not in its usual happy state, that the drivers were having to turn the car on the throttle in the slow corners," Lord explained during a team debrief session.
Lord added that this behavior further escalated tire temperature management challenges, making it a complex issue to unravel. The team is now facing a multi-dimensional problem that will dictate not only the immediate setup adjustments for the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix but also the fundamental direction of next season's car development.
