Formula 1, Sportrik Media - McLaren heads into the new Formula 1 2026 regulatory era under mounting pressure after pre-season testing exposed a notable performance deficit ahead of the Australian Grand Prix.
The Woking-based outfit completed 1,064 laps across the Barcelona shakedown and two Bahrain tests, underlining strong baseline reliability of its 2026 package. However, outright pace remains a concern. Oscar Piastri’s best time of 1:32.861 ranked McLaren second-fastest overall, yet almost nine-tenths adrift of Charles Leclerc and Ferrari.
Team principal Andrea Stella has openly acknowledged that Ferrari and Mercedes appear “a step ahead” entering the Melbourne opener. McLaren is therefore expected to adopt a measured approach in the early rounds, prioritising optimisation of its core aerodynamic and power unit package before introducing significant upgrades.
“We need to start the season with realism. There are teams currently slightly ahead of us, and we must close that gap progressively,” Stella stated in the team’s official communication.
Lando Norris also highlighted the difficulty of matching rivals’ race pace without compromising tyre life, a factor that could influence strategic flexibility during the opening flyaway races.
“At the minute, we’re a little bit off. To match the race pace of some of the others, we have to push more, and that increases degradation,” Norris explained.
The 2026 regulations represent a structural reset for Formula 1, featuring expanded electrical deployment up to 350kW and more sophisticated active aerodynamics. In that context, McLaren’s historical strength in tyre management and long-run consistency may prove decisive across a demanding 24-race calendar.
Although the reigning double champions remain firmly in contention, early indicators suggest that defending both titles will require accelerated development momentum through the opening phase of the season before the championship battle intensifies in Europe.
