When the lights went out at Monza, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were fighting hard for fourth place. But a late-race incident sparked a heated team radio exchange. Lando Norris accused teammate Oscar Piastri of forcing him off track. Now, McLaren is set to review their internal racing rules.
In Sunday's 53-lap Italian Grand Prix, Piastri started sixth while Norris lined up eighth. By lap 48, Norris had passed Piastri to take fourth. But Piastri reclaimed the position a lap later. Norris tried again in the closing laps, but as he attempted to overtake on the left side, he ran out of room and put two wheels on the grass. "He pushed me off," Norris complained over the radio.
The incident caught the attention of McLaren team principal Andrea Stella. Initially, the team didn't want to interfere, sticking to their "philosophy of going racing." However, after reviewing the footage, Stella admitted the episode was more "benign" than it looked in the heat of the moment. "When Lando put the wheels on the grass, he made a comment, but when we reviewed it, it was much more benign," Stella said.
Stella also acknowledged that the internal fight could cost the team, especially in their pursuit of Max Verstappen. "As soon as you fight with each other, you may lose time. Was there a better way to fight Verstappen? We will review," he added.
McLaren has a history of launching internal reviews after Monza. Last year, the infamous 'papaya rules' were in the spotlight when Piastri was ordered to let Norris by. Now, with the outcome of any inquiry pending, Stella admitted the team had little chance of defending from Verstappen, who eventually finished third behind George Russell and race winner Kimi Antonelli.
Despite this, Stella insisted that letting his drivers race was the right decision. "We thought it was the right thing to do. We didn't want to interfere with the normal development of the race," he concluded.
