Max Verstappen Warns Bumpy COTA Track Surface Ahead of 2026 US GP

Ahead of the 2026 United States Grand Prix, four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has issued a stern warning regarding the extremely bumpy track surface at the Circuit of the Americas. The leading Red Bull Racing driver even joked that he might need to order a new spine after the grueling weekend due to the severe vertical oscillations.

Verstappen arrives in Austin carrying strong momentum following successive victories in recent rounds. However, the Dutch driver has deliberately tempered expectations, explaining that he prefers to take it race by race. He acknowledged that COTA presents a completely unique layout and aerodynamic challenge compared to the previous venues on the calendar.

His apprehension stems from observing the World Endurance Championship's recent visit to the Texas facility, where the undulating asphalt visibly troubled competing machinery. This prompted his vivid description of the physical toll awaiting the grid, highlighting the immense task engineers face in configuring suspension stiffness without sacrificing overall cornering grip.

'From what I saw in WEC, the track is incredibly bumpy. Oh my god, I probably need to order a new spine after the weekend or become like Robocop. Crazy,' Verstappen remarked. He emphasized that mastering these surface irregularities represents a fresh hurdle for every competitor in the paddock as they seek optimal ride heights.

Beyond Austin, the calendar immediately shifts focus to the high-altitude challenges of Mexico, where cooling efficiency and power unit performance under thin air will dictate success. With six rounds remaining in the 2026 campaign, Verstappen sits fourth in the drivers' standings, fiercely hunting down competitors like Lewis Hamilton as the championship battle reaches its climax.
