Max Verstappen has called on Red Bull to investigate a mechanical issue that hampered his performance during qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The Dutch driver had shown promising pace in final practice, finishing inside the top three.
However, Max Verstappen could not maintain that momentum in qualifying and had to settle for sixth place at the end of Q3. He complained about a recurring problem with his rear axle that emerged at the most critical moment of the weekend.
Recurring Mechanical Failure at a Crucial Juncture
Verstappen revealed that the car felt significantly better in FP3 thanks to overnight improvements by the team. He believed the car was in a much better operating window, but the issue resurfaced when it mattered most.
“In FP3, we actually had a very good improvement overnight. The car was in a much better window, but we didn't really touch the car too much going into qualifying. I suddenly had a feeling that something failed on the rear axle again, not the wing, but something else mechanically, which we have to look into again,” he explained.
He stressed that this was not the first time such a problem had occurred. It has struck randomly throughout the weekend, and this time it emerged during the most important part—the session that determines the starting grid.
Impact of the Issue and Investigation Plans
Verstappen was also due to get a tow from teammate Liam Lawson in Q3, but the New Zealander failed to advance after being blocked by Oscar Piastri in Q2. However, Verstappen insisted it made little difference given the severity of his own car trouble.
“When you have these kinds of problems, it becomes super difficult to drive. The car is not compliant anymore when it should be over bumps and kerbs, and that's just costing lap time,” Verstappen commented.
He admitted he was not fighting for pole position, but the car felt comfortable to drive in FP3. The sudden loss of performance is a significant blow for Red Bull as they battle to close the gap in the constructors' championship, and it will certainly be a major focus for the Austrian squad.
