The final practice session of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos delivered high tension as Max Verstappen claimed the fastest lap time. The Red Bull Racing star edged out newly-crowned Formula 1 champion Andrea Kimi Antonelli by a mere 0.025 seconds on soft tyre simulations around the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace.
Despite showing ominous race pace in Sunday's final practice, the Dutch driver faces a massive uphill battle. The four-time world champion is set to start Sunday's grand prix from the back of the grid after Red Bull elected to change power unit components on his RB22 ahead of the crucial running.
The most dramatic mechanical failure of the session befell Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion, now driving for Scuderia Ferrari, hit immediate trouble with a brand-new engine fitted into his SF-26 chassis, reporting severe engine braking issues before smoke was visibly pouring from the car.
After returning briefly to the garage, the British driver was sent back out only to pit immediately as smoke filled the cockpit. The issue robbed him of vital track time, preventing him from completing a soft-tyre qualifying simulation and leaving him down in 12th place, while teammate Charles Leclerc managed to secure fifth position.
Elsewhere in the top order, Lando Norris took third for McLaren behind Antonelli, while George Russell rounded out the top four for Mercedes. Meanwhile, Cadillac's Sergio Perez faces a post-session stewards' investigation for driving in an unsafe condition following an incident near the end of FP3.
