Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen was only able to put the No.3 Team Verstappen entry 15th on the grid for the GT World Challenge Europe Portimao round. The four-time world champion is making his debut in the category this weekend due to an FIA World Endurance Championship clash in Barcelona removing regular drivers from the lineup.
The No.3 crew showed promising signs earlier in the weekend after ranking 20th at the end of FP1, before impressively leaping up to fourth place in FP2 just ahead of the all-important qualifying sessions.
However, the 65-minute qualifying session proved to be a difficult affair for the Mercedes squad, as they failed to lift themselves higher than 15th across any of the three segments. The qualifying result in GTWCE is strictly based on the average of three lap times across Q1, Q2, and Q3.
Ben Barnicoat took the first segment and placed 21st, before handing over the car to Chris Lulham for Q2. Lulham managed to improve the team's standing up to 15th place with a solid effort, keeping the car in contention within the tightly packed midfield.
Verstappen drove the car for the final stint in Q3 and managed to set the best individual lap of the session for the car, but it was ultimately not enough to pull them out of 15th position overall based on the combined average laps from the earlier segments. Meanwhile, Porsche claimed pole position with the No.2 Boutsen VDS entry ahead of a competitive field.
