The second free practice session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez turned chaotic after Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson made wheel-to-wheel contact through the technical stadium complex. The dramatic collision sent debris across the racing asphalt, forcing officials to deploy an immediate red flag. Following the session, the reigning world champion did not hold back in his assessment of the Racing Bulls driver.
While enjoying a strong campaign as the best of the rest in ninth place in the drivers' standings, the young New Zealander faces immense pressure regarding his seat. Rumors and paddock speculation persistently link Red Bull junior and F2 driver Nikola Tsolov to his potential drive, creating a precarious position for the team's future prospects.
Recalling the controversial moment that summoned both drivers to the stewards' office, Verstappen explained that he was pushing hard on a fast out-lap to overcome minor technical issues. He noted that his rival was moving slowly before aggressively speeding up as soon as the championship leader attempted an overtake.

"I was on a fast out lap because I had some little issues, so I was pushing on quite a bit," the four-time F1 drivers' champion said. "He was driving really slowly, so I was like, 'All right, let's go for it.' But as soon as he saw me arrive, he started to speed up... I don't know what was going through his head when that happened, trying to just run me off the track."
The contact caused notable damage to the RB22 machinery, stripping away essential bodywork components and severely hampering aerodynamic performance for the remainder of the hour. Once green flag conditions returned, the Dutch star managed to salvage the fifth fastest time, while his on-track opponent settled for ninth place.
"The bargeboard... was broken up," Verstappen added. "So of course you lose downforce for that." Read our in-depth analysis and stay updated with all the latest paddock news on Sportrik Media.
