During the current Formula 1 break, Max Verstappen decided to make his highly anticipated debut in the GT World Challenge Europe at Portimao. Following his remarkable performance earlier this year at the Nurburgring 24 Hours where he was heavily in contention for victory before technical misfortune struck, the reigning F1 dominator returned behind the wheel of a GT3 machine. Driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 fielded by his own setup alongside co-drivers Ben Barnicoat and Chris Lulham, expectations within the paddock were running exceptionally high.

The trio initially signaled their competitive pace by clocking a strong fourth-fastest time during the second free practice session. However, qualifying proved to be a completely different challenge, ultimately relegating them down the grid to a modest 14th place start. This surprising grid position immediately drew remarks from the front-row occupants who secured the premier spot for the upcoming endurance showdown.

Pole position was claimed by Morris Schuring alongside teammates Dorian Boccolacci and Alessio Picarielli aboard the Boutsen VDS Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R Evo. Despite Verstappen starting further down the order, Schuring made it clear that he fully expects a hard charge from the multiple Formula 1 world champion during the race.

Speaking about his fellow countryman's qualifying struggles, Schuring noted that pace was never a question of driver capability. "I had expected them to be a bit further up the grid. Everything points to them having encountered a problem, because it certainly could not be down to the drivers—all three are fantastic, including Max himself," he explained while assessing the threat from the rival garage.

Looking ahead to the race strategy, Schuring emphasized the unpredictability of endurance racing and the threat of a recovery drive. "I am certain they will find their way forward during the race, and I hope it takes long enough for us to stay at the front until the checkered flag. You never know what will happen with safety cars and race strategy—everything plays a role. We are keeping our feet on the ground and simply looking forward to the race," he concluded.
