Max Verstappen has described Red Bull's podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix as an "extremely positive" result after delivering the team's first podium since becoming its own Formula 1 power unit manufacturer. The third-place finish in Montreal marked a significant milestone for Red Bull Racing following a challenging start to the 2026 campaign.
Starting sixth on the grid, Verstappen produced one of his strongest drives of the season to secure a place on the podium at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Throughout the opening rounds, Red Bull had often struggled to match the pace of Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren, making the Canadian result an important breakthrough.
The Dutchman's race was aided by McLaren's strategic gamble at the start. Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri began the race on intermediate tyres despite largely dry conditions, forcing them into early pit stops and removing them from contention near the front.

Verstappen's chances improved further when George Russell retired from the lead with a power unit failure. The Mercedes driver's exit transformed the battle for the podium and opened the door for Red Bull to secure its strongest result of the season.
During the early stages, Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton and ran ahead of the Ferrari driver. However, Hamilton's stronger pace in the closing laps eventually allowed him to reclaim second position, leaving Verstappen to settle for third at the chequered flag.
"Yeah, I think so. I had some cool battles out there. Racing back up front is always better, right? And for us to have our first podium, of course, is really positive. Very happy with that, and with the cool battle with Lewis Hamilton as well at the end," Verstappen said.
The podium carries additional significance for Red Bull given its difficult transition into the new era as a full power unit manufacturer. Reliability and performance challenges have frequently left the Milton Keynes-based squad behind its main rivals during the opening phase of the championship.
"We just kept pushing to the line. In a weekend where it's not that easy to get things right, for us to be on the podium here is extremely positive, so naturally I'm very happy with that," Verstappen added.
Despite the encouraging result, Verstappen believes Red Bull still has considerable work ahead if it is to return to regular race-winning contention. Mercedes remains the benchmark in both championships, while Ferrari and McLaren continue introducing upgrades in an increasingly competitive development battle.
"We need to keep working and improving better than our competition. That's the target. We'll see over the coming races what we can do," Verstappen concluded.
Canada may prove to be a turning point in Red Bull's season. The team's first podium of 2026 offers valuable momentum, but sustaining that progress will require continued development as the championship enters a crucial phase in the coming rounds.
