Max Verstappen is facing an uphill battle at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos after Red Bull Racing opted to change engine components on his RB20. This technical adjustment forces the Dutch world champion to start Sunday's Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix from the very back of the grid.
Prior to the penalty confirmation, the reigning champion secured third place in Friday's second practice session and showed promising long-run pace. However, his radio messages frequently highlighted underlying frustrations regarding clutch reliability, power unit behavior, and steering feedback through Interlagos' sweeping technical sections.
Red Bull head of strategy Hannah Schmitz noted on Friday that the team was actively investigating multiple adjustments for Max's car. While the driver expressed clear dissatisfaction with several balance traits, engineers quickly mapped out the root causes to rectify them ahead of the competitive sessions.

Reporting from the paddock indicates that Verstappen joins George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in taking grid penalties at Interlagos due to power unit changes. Furthermore, Red Bull became one of two teams alongside Aston Martin to breach the FIA curfew regulations, utilizing their second of four allowed exemptions for the current campaign.
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies pointed out that his star driver has previously delivered miraculous charges from the back in Brazil, referencing past masterclasses where Max carved through the field from deep grid slots. Mekies also confirmed the team will review tactical tow options to assist teammate Isack Hadjar in qualifying depending on track evolution and weather shifts.
