Maverick Vinales has officially been cleared to return to MotoGP action at the 2026 Catalan Grand Prix with Red Bull KTM Tech3 following a lengthy recovery process after shoulder surgery. The Spaniard is set to rejoin the team aboard the KTM RC16 at one of his home races of the season.
Vinales had been sidelined since withdrawing from the United States Grand Prix due to complications related to a previously sustained shoulder injury. The issue forced him to undergo corrective surgery at the end of March before missing the rounds in Jerez and Le Mans while focusing entirely on rehabilitation.
KTM and Tech3’s decision not to rush his comeback highlighted the physical demands of modern MotoGP machinery. Shoulder injuries remain particularly critical in the current aerodynamic era because they directly affect braking stability, rapid direction changes, and rider control during acceleration phases under heavy load.

After completing an intensive rehabilitation programme with support from the Red Bull Athlete Performance Center, Vinales is now considered fit enough to return to competitive action. Catalunya could also provide a favourable environment for his comeback due to his familiarity with the circuit and the support of the home crowd.
“I’m happy to be back and finally returning to racing. The last few weeks have not been easy. I’ve worked hard every day to recover, with close support from Red Bull at the APC, and I’m coming back in the best possible condition,” Vinales said.
“Now I feel strong and motivated to get back on the bike. I want to thank the team for their support and patience, and I couldn’t be more excited to be starting again at my home grand prix in Catalunya,” he added.
Vinales’ return is considered important for KTM’s ongoing development programme during a highly competitive phase of the 2026 MotoGP season. His technical feedback has remained valuable for improving the RC16’s braking behaviour, rear grip distribution, and long-run stability.
Team Manager Nicolas Goyon confirmed that the team’s priority throughout the recovery period was ensuring Vinales returned at full fitness rather than accelerating the process.
“We are very happy to welcome Maverick back this weekend. From the beginning, our priority has always been his health and ensuring he returns at 100%. His experience and speed will be key for the team as we continue to make progress,” Goyon explained.
Goyon also thanked Jonas Folger for stepping in during the Le Mans weekend, describing his contribution as highly valuable under difficult circumstances.
With MotoGP now entering a crucial European stretch of the calendar, Vinales’ comeback could provide KTM with an important boost in both the constructors’ battle and the team’s wider performance development targets for the remainder of the season.
