Matt Payne has finally spoken out about the contract saga that has clouded his Supercars future. The New Zealander has been in the spotlight all season after General Motors and its homologation team, Team 18, attempted to lure him across the manufacturer divide, despite him being under contract with Grove Racing until the end of next season.
Payne's manager, Michael Patrizi, had explored the opportunity, but Grove Racing held firm on its contract position. Payne finally confirmed ahead of the Darwin Triple Crown that he intends to see out his contract and remain at Grove Racing until at least the 2027 season.
Despite the friction between the Grove family and Payne's management, Matt Payne's on-track form never dipped. In fact, amid the saga, he took control of the Supercars drivers' standings and helped Grove Racing lead the teams' championship as well.
Payne credits Patrizi for allowing him to focus on driving rather than negotiations. "He was always strongly of the opinion, 'you focus on the driving, and that's all you have to do. I'm over here managing everything else'," Payne told the Role Models podcast.
Patrizi's presence in the paddock at recent events, including Perth, signals a thaw in tensions. Payne confirmed that relationships are much better now. "Everyone is getting along a lot better now. Stuff like that always subsides," he said. "They like winning as well, and I like winning, so it's a good combination."
