Jorge Martin has insisted that leading the MotoGP championship is not his main priority right now, despite arriving at Misano with a 19-point advantage over Marc Marquez. The Aprilia rider is instead focusing on consistency and performance on track, especially with the points gap at the top so tight.
Martin, who has only one grand prix victory this season, leads Marc Marquez (Ducati) by 19 points and team-mate Marco Bezzecchi by 24. Both of his rivals have four grand prix wins each, while Martin has been consistent by finishing near the front almost every race.
Martin's lead at the top has been intact since Assen, but he lost 21 points to Marquez at Aragon. If he loses a similar amount at Misano, his championship lead could be in danger. Still, the Spaniard, who won at Misano in 2023, insists leading the standings now is "neither a priority nor a determining factor."
"The Misano GP is always special when you are on an Italian team, and together with Aprilia and the fans, I'm sure it will be a great weekend," said Martin. "We are heading to a track that I like after doing a good job in Aragon, and we have clear objectives. Leading the standings is important for the entire Aprilia team, but we've already seen that, given the close gaps, it is neither a priority nor a determining factor. We need to keep focusing on our work. I can't wait to get on the RS-GP26 and do my best at Aprilia's home race."
Meanwhile, Marco Bezzecchi is aiming for a home double after his emotional Mugello victory in May. The Italian impressed at Aragon, both in qualifying and the Sprint, and last year he finished second at Misano after a thrilling battle with Marquez.
"I'm extremely happy to be going to Misano," said Bezzecchi. "It will be fantastic to finally see all our fans again, although it will undoubtedly be a demanding weekend. I can't wait to get back on the track on my RS-GP26."
The title fight is heating up nicely. With Fabio di Giannantonio in fourth, 48 points behind Martin, and a maximum of 37 points on offer each MotoGP weekend, the championship is far from decided. Misano will be a crucial test for Martin to prove he has what it takes to be world champion.
