Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Martin Brundle has raised concerns over the limited options available to Max Verstappen should he consider leaving Red Bull Racing, amid the team’s early-season struggles in 2026.
Red Bull has faced performance challenges with the RB22, prompting speculation about Verstappen’s future and potential moves to rival teams. However, the current structure of top teams presents significant barriers to any immediate switch.
Mercedes remains committed to George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, while McLaren continues with its established pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, both of whom are delivering strong performances.

Meanwhile, Scuderia Ferrari is equally settled with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, further limiting opportunities for Verstappen to secure a competitive seat elsewhere.
“I’m not sure it’s that easy for Max to just jump ship at the moment. The top teams all have strong and stable driver line-ups,” Brundle explained.
He noted that any potential move would likely depend on a significant shift within one of these teams, something considered unlikely given existing contracts and performance levels.
Brundle also highlighted that Red Bull’s development trajectory will play a decisive role in Verstappen’s thinking, particularly with major upgrades expected to arrive at the Miami Grand Prix.
“The power unit has been quite strong, but the car itself has been struggling. We’ll see if the updates this weekend can change that situation,” he added.
As the season progresses, Verstappen’s long-term future will depend heavily on Red Bull’s ability to resolve its performance issues. The effectiveness of upcoming upgrades is expected to be a key factor in shaping decisions heading into the next phase of the 2026 championship.
