Marquez Scores Just 1 Point in Silverstone Sprint, Tire Woes Blamed

Marc Marquez could only manage a single point in the Tissot Sprint at Silverstone on Saturday. Starting from sixth, he briefly climbed to fourth on the opening lap before his pace fell off a cliff mid-race, finishing ninth and 13.965 seconds behind winner Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing).

Worryingly, his final lap was 4.4 seconds slower than his own fastest lap of the race, set on lap two. This wasn't just a loss of rhythm; it was a mysterious and sudden drop in performance. As a result, the defending champion slipped to fourth in the standings, now 29 points behind Martinator.

“I didn't expect this. We need to analyze why. Did I push the tire too hard in the early laps? Did the temperature spike? Or is there something we can change on the setup for tomorrow to make the tire last longer?” Marquez said. “We'll use the medium tire tomorrow, but it won't change the characteristics drastically.”

Throughout the sprint, Marquez admitted he was just surviving. He chose not to take risks to secure points, though the result was far from ideal. “I tried to chase the front group on lap three, but I felt something odd with the rear tire. I realized it became a battle to survive. Why take risks? Finishing seventh or ninth isn't much different,” he explained.

What's most confusing is that the problem didn't appear during practice. Even in FP2, he used the same tire as for a time attack and set four consecutive fast laps. “I'm the one most affected. We need to analyze the data and find the exact cause,” he added.

On top of tire issues, Marquez also had a moment of confusion in qualifying. He thought there was a yellow flag in Q2, but there wasn't. As a result, he missed the chance to improve his time and start from the front row. “When I saw the replay, it really looked like a yellow flag. By the time I realized it wasn't, it was too late. If that lap had counted, maybe I could have started from the front row,” he said.

Now, Marquez must quickly adjust for the main race on Sunday. “I have the pace for one fast lap. The issue is maintaining consistency and managing the tires. If not, tomorrow could be a disaster. The important thing is I didn't crash, because there were some critical moments,” he concluded.
