Marc Marquez never fails to bring a smile to MotoGP fans' faces. After clinching a dramatic victory at the San Marino Grand Prix, the Ducati rider admitted that his rivals had handed him a “present” that tasted incredibly sweet. In a race held at the Misano Circuit, Marquez capitalised on Marco Bezzecchi's opening-lap crash to secure his fifth win in the last seven races.
This victory propelled Marquez to the top of the MotoGP standings, tying on points with Aprilia's Jorge Martin but ahead on countback thanks to his superior number of wins. The Misano triumph marked the pinnacle of Marquez's remarkable comeback, having trailed the championship leader by 102 points when he returned from injury at Mugello in May.
“I was ready to ride at Mugello, not at 100%, but at least to prepare for a chance to win races. At that time, I wasn't thinking about the championship because it wasn't in my hands,” Marquez said. “But the opponents gave me a present. And when I tasted that present, it was sweet. I'm trying to take maximum profit from my riding style, from my bike, and from my team.”
The turning point came at the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park, where Marquez returned to winning ways while his rivals began to falter. Jorge Martin triggered a multi-bike crash, while Bezzecchi was banned from the Czech GP for hitting a marshal in the sprint race. Injuries to Bezzecchi and Trackhouse's Ai Ogura, plus a dip in form for VR46's Fabio di Giannantonio, further widened Marquez's opportunities.
At Misano, the fierce duel between Marquez and Bezzecchi that the home crowd had anticipated fizzled out before it truly began. Bezzecchi, starting from pole position, crashed at Turn 13 on the opening lap, throwing away his chance to compete at the front. “On that first lap, it's difficult to say [what happened],” Marquez added. “The race would have been different if I had to fight with Bezzecchi all the way to the end.”
Nevertheless, Marquez refuses to take the competition lightly. He acknowledges that his current advantage stems partly from rivals' mistakes, but he also emphasises that his speed and experience have played a major role. With the season still long, Marquez is determined to maintain consistency and not waste the momentum.
“I just try to focus on myself and the team. Every race is a different story, and I want to make sure that when that present comes again, I'm ready to take it,” he concluded.
