Marc Marquez is not backing down. After winning the sprint race at Misano, he insisted that Marco Bezzecchi remains the favourite for today's main race. Marquez made the claim after witnessing Bezzecchi's pace in Sunday morning's warm-up session.
Bezzecchi, riding for Aprilia, has been impressive all weekend. He took pole position with a new all-time lap record, though he lost the lead at Turn 1 in Saturday's sprint. Marquez, on the medium rear tyre, held off Bezzecchi on the soft to take the win.
However, the reigning champion believes that once both switch to the medium rear for the grand prix, Bezzecchi will be even more competitive. "I believe Marco with the medium rear will be the guy to beat," Marquez said. "He has this extra boost, he'll push. As we saw today, he never gives up."
Marquez also calculated his title chances. He starts the race 14 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin, who finished third in the sprint. Bezzecchi is 22 points from the top. "I expect tomorrow Marco will be very fast. But today we took twelve points. If tomorrow we take 20 and he takes 25, we only lose 3 points this weekend. So not bad," he added.
In warm-up, Bezzecchi again showed his dominance, beating Marquez by 0.376s, both on the medium rear. The pattern of alternating at the top of the timesheets has occurred all weekend, except in Q1. Seeing this, Marquez is even more convinced of his prediction.
"No, after warm-up, I reconfirm! Because as we saw, Marco was super fast in the warm-up, and he will be very fast during all the race," he stated. "So let's see. We need to understand what is our level. But today and during the weekend, Marco was very fast."
Nevertheless, Marquez is cautious. He realises the battle is not just between him and Bezzecchi. "In the end, it's not only about me and Marco. Also, some other riders have a very good pace with the medium rear," he said. "But yesterday we already won, so today a second position for us would be okay. But we will try everything to make Marco's life a bit more difficult."
