Helmut Marko has responded to Max Verstappen’s concerns over his reduced enjoyment of Formula 1 in 2026, indicating that competitiveness remains the decisive factor behind the Dutch driver’s current stance. The Red Bull Racing advisor pointed directly to the RB22’s performance limitations as the primary cause.

Verstappen has openly criticised the 2026 regulations, describing them as limiting racing quality due to a stronger emphasis on energy management and efficiency. His frustration has been amplified by Red Bull’s difficult start to the season, with the team collecting just 16 points from the opening three rounds and sitting sixth in the constructors’ standings.

From a technical perspective, the RB22 has struggled with fundamental balance issues, particularly in aerodynamic stability and power unit deployment. The shift in regulations has forced teams to prioritise energy recovery and deployment strategies, altering throttle response characteristics and reducing the margin for aggressive racing inputs. Red Bull’s current package appears to be less optimised under these constraints compared to its main rivals.

Marko stated that the team has already identified key weaknesses within the car and is working on targeted solutions to restore competitiveness. He emphasised that once the RB22 becomes more competitive, Verstappen’s engagement and satisfaction with racing are expected to improve accordingly.

Beyond internal challenges, the competitive landscape has further complicated Red Bull’s position. Mercedes has emerged as the benchmark team, combining a highly efficient chassis with a strong power unit. The pairing of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli has positioned the team as the early favourite in the championship battle.

At the same time, rivals such as McLaren and Ferrari are preparing significant upgrade packages for the Miami round. Ferrari, in particular, is expected to introduce a major aerodynamic revision to the SF-26, aimed at improving downforce efficiency while maintaining straight-line speed.

Marko remains cautious about Red Bull’s immediate prospects, suggesting that Mercedes still holds a clear advantage with untapped performance potential. The upcoming Miami Grand Prix will serve as a critical reference point, as multiple teams introduce upgrades that could reshape the competitive order in the 2026 season.
