The parents of the late Marco Simoncelli shared an emotional tribute on Thursday ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the Italian rider's tragic passing following an accident on the second lap of the race at Sepang back in October 2011.
Simoncelli had made his premier-class debut in 2010 with the Gresini Honda squad after capturing the 250cc world championship crown in 2008. His aggressive riding style and charismatic personality quickly earned him a massive fanbase, while also keeping his on-track competitors on high alert throughout the weekends.
Continuing with the Gresini outfit into the 2011 season, the talented 24-year-old secured his maiden premier-class podium at the Czech Grand Prix. He quickly followed that up with another stellar podium finish at the subsequent Australian Grand Prix.

Keeping his legacy alive, his father Paolo Simoncelli established the SIC58 Squadra Corse team in memory of his son. Ahead of the action at Sepang, Paolo alongside his wife Rossella and the team posted a heartfelt social media message alongside photographs of the memorial plaque situated at the exact corner of the tragic incident.
Their brief statement read: “Some places hold memories that will never fade. Always with us, Marco.” The Sepang International Circuit remains a place of profound mixed emotions for the family, having hosted both his greatest championship triumph in 2008 and his final moments.
