Marc Marquez admitted he gave everything in his thrilling Australian MotoGP Sprint duel with title rival Jorge Martin at Phillip Island. For seven and a half laps, the pair gave the circuit a fitting Sprint send-off, trading the race and World Championship lead in a breathtaking display of on-the-limit racing.
However, Martin crossed the fine line between glory and disaster at Turn 8 on lap eight, losing the front of his Aprilia and bouncing through the gravel while chasing Marquez. The Spanish rider went on to secure the victory and retake the championship lead before learning about his rival's physical condition.
Speaking to MotoGP.com, Marquez expressed immediate concern upon hearing the news regarding his competitor. First of all, his team informed him that Jorge was in the medical centre, so he wished the best for him because it would also be good for the championship show. He emphasized that the encounter was a true title fight, aggressive and at the limit, but inside the regulatory boundaries.
Despite Aprilia showing strong potential throughout the weekend practice sessions, Marquez had consistently beaten his rival in both wet and dry conditions. Martin stepped up significantly during the Sprint but rode aggressively on the limit, running wide on multiple occasions while attempting to maintain his lead against the dominant Ducati.
Following the chaos at the front, Marquez still faced a potential challenge from his younger brother, Alex Marquez, who had successfully caught up to the leading group. Although admitting his sibling had the pace to challenge for the win, the world championship leader expressed gratitude that no unnecessary risks were taken during the closing stages.
