MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez with Ducati Corse is under scrutiny regarding his physical condition in MotoGP 2026 after a strong warning from former rival Andrea Dovizioso, who believes his situation is more serious than it appears.
The Spanish rider suffered a complex shoulder injury at the 2025 Indonesian Grand Prix, which ruled him out for the remainder of the season. Although he has returned to competition in 2026, Marquez has openly admitted he is not yet at full fitness, highlighting that both the bike and his own physical condition are limiting factors in his performance.
From a results perspective, Marquez has yet to secure a grand prix podium across the opening three rounds of the 2026 season. However, he has claimed a sprint victory and an additional sprint podium. At the same time, Aprilia Racing has emerged as the benchmark, winning all three grands prix so far and placing added pressure on Ducati’s campaign.
In an interview with Moto.it, Dovizioso emphasized that Marquez’s situation may be underestimated externally, particularly due to his personality and approach to competition.
“Marc is not a rider who complains and has never made excuses. Because of that, the reality of how he is doing and how many problems he has is often not fully appreciated,” said Dovizioso.
He further suggested that Marquez’s physical limitations—especially concerning his right arm, previously injured in 2020—remain a significant factor. According to Dovizioso, the Indonesia crash may have compounded these issues, even if medical assessments did not indicate further structural damage.
“In my opinion, his situation is much more serious than it seems. He still has a lot of physical improvements to make. Perhaps the crash in Indonesia has increased the limitation in his right arm, which I believe has no complete solution,” he added.
Dovizioso also pointed to the United States Grand Prix in Austin as a key reference point. Historically one of Marquez’s strongest circuits, his inability to dominate there served as a clear indication that underlying physical constraints are still affecting his performance.
From a technical standpoint, Ducati is also facing increased competition, with performance deficits relative to Aprilia complicating Marquez’s situation further. This creates a dual challenge: adapting to the bike’s characteristics while managing ongoing physical recovery.
With an extended break in the calendar following the postponement of the Qatar Grand Prix, Marquez now has additional time to focus on rehabilitation ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. This period is expected to be critical in determining whether he can return to peak performance and sustain his challenge in the 2026 MotoGP title fight.
