Marc Marquez insists he is not returning to the track at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix to revive his MotoGP title ambitions, but instead to “rebuild” the future of his career after another difficult period of injuries.
The Ducati rider returns to action at Mugello after missing the Catalan Grand Prix due to shoulder surgery that was brought forward earlier than initially planned. The operation was aimed at resolving radial nerve issues caused by remaining metalwork from a previous injury following his crash in Indonesia last season.
Marquez arrives at Mugello trailing championship leader Marco Bezzecchi by 85 points. However, the seven-time world champion made clear he is not thinking about the championship battle because forcing that mentality could lead to further injuries.

“If I come back with the mentality that I can win this championship, I will be injured again,” Marquez told the official MotoGP website.
“Now is not the correct moment. Right now I’m in the mentality to rebuild my future, because riding the way I did in the first races, I wasn’t able to continue.”
The comments underline a major shift in Marquez’s career approach. Over recent seasons, his aggressive riding style and constant effort to extract maximum performance beyond his physical limits repeatedly resulted in serious injuries. That situation has now pushed Marquez to prioritise long-term recovery over immediate results.
In addition to the shoulder surgery, Marquez also underwent treatment on the foot injury he sustained during the French Grand Prix sprint race. However, he explained that the foot issue was relatively minor and that the shoulder remained his biggest limitation.
“The feeling is acceptable. That’s why I’m here,” Marquez said.
“We analysed the situation with the doctors and physios, and we understand that the correct step now is to give it time while still being on the bike.”
Marquez explained that nerve recovery is significantly more complicated than recovering from a standard injury. Although the nerve damage itself has now been resolved, his body still requires time to restore normal strength and response in his right arm, which has remained his weakest point in recent years.
The Spanish rider also stressed that his target at Mugello is not immediately fighting for victories, but instead gradually rebuilding feeling and physical strength session by session throughout the weekend.
“I will try to work and understand if I can reach an acceptable level to fight with the top guys in the next races,” he said.
“The easiest way would be to stay at home and come back in three or four races, but I’m not afraid of trying to approach the situation in the correct way while improving as quickly as possible.”
Marquez’s return at Mugello has become one of the biggest storylines of the middle phase of the 2026 MotoGP season. Even if his title hopes are fading, his physical recovery and ability to adapt once again will likely determine whether he can still re-establish himself as a genuine front-running contender at the highest level of MotoGP in the long term.
