The qualifying session for the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island delivered sheer drama when Marc Marquez admitted to making a massive blunder right at the start of the session. The reigning champion, locked in a fierce title battle, had dominated the wet final practice session but was abruptly caught out on his opening flying lap in qualifying.
Sliding off at the Miller corner hairpin without a single recorded time, the Spanish star was suddenly facing the nightmare scenario of starting from the back of the grid for both races. However, quick thinking allowed him to navigate his Ducati back to the paddock via a service road, sprint through the pits onto his spare bike, and launch a stunning charge from last to pole.
“You cannot crash on the first lap because it means you don't have a lap time. So I did a big mistake in that Turn 4,” Marc Marquez said in parc ferme after executing the remarkable turnaround.

The rapid response from his mechanics ensured he had a second machine ready to go instantly. Keeping his composure, he channeled the exact feeling from earlier wet sessions and extracted maximum performance from his final flying lap to dominate the timesheets by nearly 1.5 seconds.
Meanwhile, younger brother Alex Marquez secured second place for Gresini, admitting that the erratic weather conditions made the entire qualifying grid shootout an intensely stressful experience for the entire paddock.
