Reigning champion Marc Marquez has hit back at MotoGP's newly introduced financial penalties for riders who miss promotional activities during race weekends. The policy was enforced following an email circulated to riders at the Indonesian Grand Prix, stating they would face a 5000 euro fine for skipping promotional events.
The regulation was specifically implemented for the Sunday morning 'Hero Walk', a designated meet-and-greet zone for fans. Under the new guidelines, riders must spend a minimum of 10 minutes interacting with supporters or face financial punishment, with penalties escalating for repeated offenses alongside potential sporting sanctions.
This rule enforcement follows weeks of monitoring by championship organizers regarding rider engagement. The tension was further heightened a week prior in Japan, where Marquez sent a stunt double to participate in a pre-race kart event because he needed to prioritize shoulder recovery and his championship campaign over commercial exercises.

Asked for his thoughts following a sixth-place finish at the Indonesian Grand Prix, the veteran rider emphasized his desire to see the championship expand while arguing that contemporary demands placed on athletes have become excessively burdensome.
"As a rider, we are, and I’m the first one who wants MotoGP to grow and be bigger and bigger," Marquez stated regarding his commitment to the series. "Pero I think we can have different ways to grow the sport without pushing the riders so much. This is my feeling. Now, we have a lot of things to do, because it’s not only the MotoGP things."
He detailed the relentless schedule defining a modern grand prix weekend, encompassing sponsor commitments, technical meetings, warm-up sessions, rapid transitions to parades, and the exhaustive Hero Walk. Marquez warned that the situation will intensify moving forward under demanding new weekend formats requiring athletes to spend prolonged hours suited up in leather.
According to Crash.net, Marquez concluded by stressing that the true spectacle belongs strictly on the asphalt rather than in marketing activations. "So, in the end, we are athletes. Next year, even the schedule is more and more because time on the track is the same but it’s more intense, and it’s more time with the leather suits on. So, in the end, we are the first ones that would like to help the championship, but there are other ways to grow. We have the show on the race track, not outside."
