Marc Marquez topped FP1 at the Japanese MotoGP in Motegi after edging title rival Jorge Martin by just 0.099 seconds. Marquez set a 1:44.073 on his final lap in a session held on a damp circuit.
Rain spots at the start of the session prompted Marquez to delay his first run. The rider completed only 10 laps, among the fewest of any competitor. The decision proved effective as track conditions improved towards the end of the session.
The session was also marked by a heavy crash for HRC wildcard Takaaki Nakagami at Turn 11. Bezzecchi had already survived a moment at the same corner before Nakagami suffered a highside and was thrown from his bike. He was later diagnosed with a fractured left collarbone and did not complete a single lap.

The injury creates an additional issue for Honda ahead of the next round in Indonesia. Nakagami's injury also affects the manufacturer's 850cc testing programme. Somkiat Chantra, who completed his first MotoGP laps since last year's Valencia finale, has WorldSBK commitments during the Indonesian weekend.
As the track improved, Raul Fernandez, Bezzecchi, Alex Marquez and Bezzecchi took turns at the front. Martin then briefly moved into first place before Marquez responded on his final lap with his 1:44.073 benchmark.
Marquez's time remained just over one second away from Pecco Bagnaia's official lap record. However, the resurfaced Motegi circuit had already produced record pace during the drier Moto2 session, suggesting significant improvements could follow if the rain stays away.
All riders used soft front and medium rear tyres during FP1. The expected afternoon combination is a medium front and soft rear for time attacks, while hard compounds at both ends are also available because of the resurfacing.
Bezzecchi completed the top three behind the two title contenders, followed by Alex Marquez, Johann Zarco and Fabio Quartararo. Pecco Bagnaia was eighth, while Pedro Acosta finished 10th. Maverick Vinales began his MotoGP return in 18th after completing 13 laps.
The next MotoGP Practice session in Japan is scheduled for 3pm local time, with track conditions set to remain a key factor as the field continues preparations for qualifying.
