MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez of Ducati Corse has admitted that both technical limitations and his physical condition are contributing factors to his difficult start in the 2026 MotoGP title defence.
The opening rounds have highlighted a contrast in Marquez’s performance. While he has demonstrated strong pace in qualifying and sprint races — including a victory in Brazil — his results in full-length grands prix have been inconsistent. Mechanical issues, such as a late wheel failure in Thailand, along with penalties in the United States, have disrupted potential podium finishes.
However, beyond technical setbacks, Marquez’s physical condition has emerged as a key concern. The seven-time world champion is still dealing with the aftereffects of complex shoulder surgery undergone late last season. This has impacted his ability to sustain peak performance across race distance, particularly during critical opening laps.

In Ducati’s latest internal video series, Marquez openly acknowledged that the challenges extend beyond the bike itself.
“The bike is one factor, but I am another factor. I’m struggling.”
“I felt fast and comfortable, but there are moments where I lose time.”
He emphasised that the opening phase of races remains a decisive weakness. According to his own analysis, improving performance in the first laps could significantly alter race outcomes.
“I reviewed the races in Thailand and Brazil. If I get the first three laps right, we are in the fight for victory.”
From a competitive standpoint, the situation also reflects a shift in the balance of power within the championship. Aprilia Racing has emerged as a strong benchmark in race conditions, showing a clear advantage in overall pace. Meanwhile, Marquez’s team-mate Francesco Bagnaia has also acknowledged that Ducati is currently trailing its main rival in certain areas.
This assessment is supported by team management, with Davide Tardozzi pointing out that Marquez’s results cannot be separated from his physical limitations. Adapting to a new-generation bike requires full physical capacity, something Marquez is still working to regain.
Technically, Ducati faces the challenge of balancing one-lap performance with race consistency. While the package remains competitive in specific conditions, it has yet to deliver the dominant race pace seen in previous seasons. This has opened the door for rivals to capitalise in the early phase of the championship.
The extended break in April presents a critical opportunity for recovery. With the Qatar Grand Prix postponed, focus now shifts to regaining physical condition ahead of the next round in Jerez. This period could prove decisive in shaping the trajectory of Marquez’s title defence.
As the 2026 MotoGP season progresses, the combination of physical recovery and technical development will be crucial for both Marquez and Ducati. If both areas improve, a return to consistent front-running contention remains possible, but the growing strength of rivals such as Aprilia suggests that the challenge ahead will intensify.
