Marc Marquez has revealed he held informal discussions with Honda over a potential MotoGP return in 2027 before ultimately deciding to extend his contract with Ducati. The seven-time world champion made the revelation during an interview with DAZN.
Ducati officially confirmed Marquez's two-year contract extension last week, ending months of speculation that had been prolonged by negotiations between MotoGP's manufacturers and the championship over a new commercial agreement. Despite committing his future to Ducati, Marquez acknowledged that Honda had approached him regarding a possible reunion under the new 2027 regulations.
"There was an informal conversation, but I knew for sure that I wanted to hear from Ducati first," Marquez told DAZN. "If I was happy, I wasn't going to get caught up in the back-and-forth of going here or there. And with Ducati, we sat down and hit it off right away."

Marquez shares one of the most successful partnerships in MotoGP history with Honda Racing Corporation (HRC). He made his premier-class debut with Honda in 2013 and won six of his seven world championships with the Japanese manufacturer. Honda also stood firmly behind him throughout his lengthy injury recovery following his 2020 crash, honouring the four-year contract he had signed before that season.
However, as Marquez gradually recovered physically, Honda's competitiveness declined significantly. That ultimately prompted him to leave HRC one year before the end of his contract after the 2023 season. He joined Gresini Racing on a year-old Ducati without a factory salary to rebuild his career before earning promotion to the Ducati factory team in 2025, where he returned to championship-winning form.
Marquez admitted the idea of returning to Honda carried strong emotional appeal but insisted logic ultimately prevailed. "Returning to Honda would have been very romantic, and obviously I really wanted to. But I already take enough risks on the track. There are times when you have to weigh things with your head, not your heart, like with the last decision I made to leave Honda. And it worked out well for me," he added to DAZN.
His comments underline why Ducati remained the preferred destination despite interest from Honda. With MotoGP preparing for a major technical reset in 2027, Marquez has chosen continuity over sentiment, believing the Italian manufacturer offers the strongest platform to continue competing for world championships.
