The return of Ford as a full factory team in the World Rally Championship (WRC) starting from the 2029 season marks a massive turning point for the global rallying community. This major announcement officially ends a long wait for M-Sport, which for over a decade had to fight independently relying on Blue Oval machinery without direct manufacturer backing since the American car manufacturer's last full involvement back in the 2012 season.

Behind the announcement of their continued collaboration to jointly build a new rally car for the upcoming regulations, a deeply emotional reality was revealed by the British team's leadership. For the past 14 years, the uncertainty of corporate funding became a haunting anxiety lingering right up until the deadline for entry closures, constantly threatening the company's financial survival in top-tier international rallying.

"You can imagine. I think I said I had two desires, two passions. One was to get rally back to where I believe it can be. And the second one was obviously to get Ford back in WRC," Wilson said in Sardinia, highlighting the immense pressure of keeping the automotive giant's legacy alive in rallying without direct corporate financial shielding.

The heavy burden historically carried by Malcolm Wilson is now finally lifting thanks to a crystal-clear direction for the next four years. Aside from the renewed manufacturer commitment, the arrival of a new WRC promoter has also injected fresh optimism, establishing a much more stable and promising foundation for the sport compared to previous turbulent years.

Although Ford will provide backing and access to the automotive giant's resources, the core operational structure on the ground will remain entirely unchanged. The Cumbria-based squad will maintain total responsibility for the design, development, and execution of the entire programme, leaning on a rich history that boasts winning the last five world rallies on debut with a brand-new car.
