Luca Marini might not have finished where he wanted, but his spirited defence against Fabio di Giannantonio at the Misano MotoGP left everyone talking—including Marini himself, who joked that Diggia "hates me" after their intense on-track tussle.

Marini, riding for the LCR Honda team, was determined to keep the VR46 Ducati rider behind him in front of the passionate Italian crowd. For 15 laps, the Honda rider put up a fierce fight, closing every gap and making his RS-GP as wide as possible. "I gave everything to keep behind Diggia," Marini said with a smile. "For sure he hates me! Because we did a really, really bad race, I was closing everything for 15 laps. But this was the only way to keep him behind."

Despite his best efforts, Marini's defence eventually crumbled in the closing stages. A rear-tyre vibration, caused by the tyre spinning on the rim, left him "with no weapons" as both di Giannantonio and Tech3 KTM's Enea Bastianini slipped past. He crossed the line just ahead of Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo and Red Bull KTM's Brad Binder.

Di Giannantonio, who was struggling with a brake issue, had nothing but respect for Marini's defence. "No, no! He was doing his best," Diggia responded when told of Marini's joke. "For sure, for him and Honda, it's super important to do a good spot, and also to keep behind a Ducati. But on my side, I was really without any weapons, so I was waiting for a mistake from him. He was riding incredibly well. I was seeing him pushing a lot. Me, I was like, 'Oh, I can be faster, but I can't be faster!' So no, it was super fair, honestly."

The battle between the two Italians was a highlight of the Misano race, showcasing the intensity and respect that defines MotoGP. Marini, who has been consistently faster than his teammates at Honda, was pleased with his weekend overall. "I had no more weapons. I couldn't do anything. But anyway, really happy for the weekend, because it was a really strong one. Every time faster than my teammates, and this is the best that I can do."

The tyre issue that cost Marini was a result of the demanding conditions at Misano. The high-grip surface, hot temperatures, and the immense power of the 1000cc prototypes all contributed to the tyre moving on the rim. "We can't complain about the tyres, because we are asking a lot of them," Marini explained. "It's just that we need to work better with the package that we have, and of course, I was also asking a lot from the rear tyre, trying to catch Raul and to create a gap to the guys behind. So it's something that can happen."

For Fabio di Giannantonio, the race was a test of patience. Despite his brake problems, he managed to find a way past Marini and secure a strong result for the VR46 team. "It was super fair," he reiterated. "I was waiting for a mistake, but he didn't make any. He was riding incredibly well."

Marini's performance at Misano, while not rewarded with a top result, underlined his growing confidence and ability to mix it with the Ducati armada. As the season progresses, the Italian will look to build on this display and continue to push Honda forward. And who knows, maybe next time he'll be the one joking about a rival hating him after a race-winning move.
