Lowdon's Cadillac Exit Wasn't Mutual, Says CEO Towriss

Graeme Lowdon has been sensationally removed as team principal of Cadillac Formula 1. The news broke on Wednesday, and CEO Dan Towriss has now clarified: this was not a mutual decision, but his call alone.

Lowdon was only informed on the morning of the announcement. He is replaced by former Alpine executive Marcin Budkowski for the rest of the 2026 season and beyond. This comes as a shock, as Lowdon was the architect of Cadillac's F1 entry, building the team from scratch.

“It wasn't a mutual decision,” Towriss said in a media roundtable with Budkowski. “The process started a few months ago: really thinking about what the next phase for Cadillac Formula 1 looks like, what's the right timing.”

Townriss admitted that talks with Budkowski went well, while Lowdon was only told that morning. “There's no easy way to make this transition within Formula 1. Can you imagine the press if Marcin strolled through for a tour of the factory?” he added.

The abruptness sparked questions on social media: was Lowdon just an interim? Towriss denied this. “I don't think it's fair to say that he was here in an interim capacity. It really is a function of performance and how things evolved. Those discussions are between Graeme and myself,” he said.

He still praised Lowdon's contribution. “What was accomplished, I have immense respect for. This isn't an interim period for me and for Graeme, it's almost a four-year period of planning and building. But given the circumstances, it was the right time to make this step,” Towriss concluded.
