In a surprising turn of events in the WorldSBK paddock ahead of the tenth round at Cremona Circuit, Italy, Loris Baz is set to make his return to the Superbike World Championship, replacing the injured Tarran Mackenzie.
Mackenzie suffered a heavy crash in FP2 at Donington Park in July, sustaining multiple injuries including fractures to his left tibia and fibula, collarbone, and shoulder blade. The British rider was forced to sit out the French Round at Magny-Cours earlier this month after being declared unfit.
Initial hopes were that Mackenzie could return at Cremona, but after assessment, he will not attempt to be passed fit. “While Tarran is still recovering from the injury he sustained at Donington Park and already had to sit out Magny-Cours, an old friend of MGM Racing and well-known WorldSBK rider returns to action this weekend at Cremona,” the team stated.
Loris Baz is no stranger to MGM, having ridden for the German squad during its BMW satellite years in 2022 and 2023. Now, he will pilot the MGM Optical Racing Team's Ducati Panigale V4. “Welcome back, Loris! Meanwhile we’re wishing Tarran a speedy and full recovery and are looking forward to hopefully having him back with us for the final two rounds of the WorldSBK season,” the statement continued.
Baz last raced full-time in WorldSBK in 2023 with MGM. Since then, he has competed in MotoAmerica and the King of the Baggers series. He also filled in for a satellite Ducati team in 2021, riding for GoEleven Ducati at Portimao. His experience and adaptability with the Ducati will be a valuable asset for MGM as they fight for position in the standings.
Although he raced at the Bol d'Or with ERC Endurance BMW last week, Baz had to retire with two hours remaining due to bike problems. Nevertheless, he is ready to return to WorldSBK. His presence at Cremona is expected to provide a morale boost and valuable points for the team.
For Mackenzie, this is a tough blow. His injuries were severe, and he must delay his comeback. The team hopes he can return for the final two rounds, but it all depends on his physical condition. Meanwhile, Baz will look to make the most of this opportunity to showcase his abilities at the highest level of Superbike racing.
