Liam Lawson Disqualified From Mexico City GP Qualifying Over Technical Breach

A strong qualifying result for Liam Lawson at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez has been completely undone after he was excluded from the official classification. The Racing Bulls driver lost his hard-earned ninth-place starting grid position for the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix due to a technical infringement.

The Faenza-based squad had initially delivered an exceptional performance on Saturday afternoon, successfully steering both cars into Q3 and emerging comfortably as the best of the rest in the midfield battle. However, post-session scrutineering by the FIA technical delegates flagged an irregularity concerning the energy recovery system on Lawson's power unit.

According to the official FIA summons document, Liam Lawson was found in breach of the minimum MGU-K power requirement immediately after crossing the finish line on his fastest flying lap in Q2. Telemetry data confirmed that the driver did not lift off the throttle instantly, failing to comply with the mandated MGU-K rampdown rate.

Article C5.12.6 of the technical regulations strictly stipulates that electrical power must be reduced gradually at a maximum rate of either 50 or 100kW per second while the electrical DC power of the ERS-K remains above 100kW. Because the throttle was not lifted immediately upon crossing the control line, the rate of reduction in MGU-K deployment exceeded the legal thresholds permitted by the governing body.

During the subsequent hearing with the stewards, all attending parties acknowledged that the infraction yielded absolutely no sporting advantage or lap time gain for the team. Nevertheless, technical non-compliance remains a strict liability offense under F1 rules, forcing the stewards to enforce the inevitable disqualification and forcing a challenging recovery drive on race day.
