Liam Lawson will now start from the back of the grid in Mexico

The Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix weekend at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez turned into a disaster for Liam Lawson. The New Zealand driver was stripped of his qualifying results following a technical infringement, forcing him to start Sunday's main race from the very back of the grid.

This weekend has proven to be a nightmare for the regular midfield contender. During Friday's second practice session, the Kiwi driver had already clashed on track with reigning world champion Max Verstappen, an incident that earned both drivers a one-place grid penalty for the Grand Prix.

Lawson's troubles deepened significantly after a post-qualifying investigation by the stewards resulted in his complete disqualification from the session, nullifying an impressive lap that had initially placed him seventh on the starting grid. The stewards determined that the Racing Bulls driver failed to lift off the throttle immediately after completing his flying lap in Q2.

"Evidence submitted, which was accepted by all parties present, showed that after the control line at the end of his fastest lap in Q2, the driver did not lift off the power immediately," the official stewards' document read. This failure directly prevented the required rate of MGU-K deployment reduction from achieving the mandated step-down procedure.

While Racing Bulls argued that the infraction did not grant any competitive advantage, the technical directives left no room for leniency. "The Stewards note in particular that the team self-disclosed the breach. However, there are a multitude of precedents that require us, despite all mitigating circumstances, to impose a penalty of disqualification where a car does not comply with the Technical Regulations," the statement concluded.

Faced with a daunting uphill battle in Mexico, Lawson must now carve his way through the field from the rear as he fights to salvage his weekend and prove his worth on the grid.
