Liam Lawson and Sergio Perez escaped penalties at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix after the stewards decided not to sanction either driver despite separate procedural infringements at the Red Bull Ring.
The Racing Bulls driver came under investigation for a practice start infringement before the race. According to the official decision, Lawson attempted to line up for a practice start but encountered another car stopped in the pit exit lane. While passing the stationary car and then moving aside after it restarted, Lawson crossed the pit exit white line at low speed before returning to complete his planned practice start.
The stewards concluded that a technical breach had occurred. However, they considered Lawson's actions appropriate given the circumstances and therefore decided not to impose a penalty.

"Car 30 was trying to line up for a practice start but encountered another car stopped in the pit exit road. Although a breach technically occurred, the driver's actions were appropriate given the circumstances and no penalty has been applied," the stewards stated.
Meanwhile, Perez also avoided punishment after his Cadillac F1 Team car moved before the official start signal. Under normal circumstances, such an infringement would result in a five-second time penalty.
However, the stewards noted that Perez had already retired from the race due to overheating brake issues before the incident was reviewed. As a time penalty would have had no practical sporting effect, they decided that applying a sanction was not appropriate.
The two decisions demonstrated that the stewards considered the specific circumstances surrounding each incident rather than applying penalties automatically. Although both drivers technically breached the regulations, neither case was judged to warrant further punishment during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.
