Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has strongly hinted at a potential extension of his illustrious Formula 1 career well into his mid-forties. This major career pivot follows the recent confirmation of a landmark 10-year agreement to host an African Grand Prix in Rwanda, with the inaugural event slated for the early 2030s.
Speaking during the official FIA press conference ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend in Austin, the marquee Ferrari driver joked that the long-awaited African race has provided him with a compelling new motivation to delay his eventual retirement from the sport.
"I'm now forced to have to stay a lot longer because we have a race in Africa and that's been my dream, to be able to race in Africa," Hamilton told international media representatives in the paddock.

Given that Hamilton is currently 41 years old, competing in the inaugural Rwandan Grand Prix if it kicks off in 2030 would push him to the age of 45. Any subsequent delay to the race debut would require the veteran driver to continue competing deep into his fifth decade of life, marking an extraordinary longevity milestone in modern motorsport history.
The press conference also featured rising star Kimi Antonelli, who actively encouraged the veteran world champion to prolong his stint on the grid long enough to experience the historic African weekend firsthand. "You got to do at least the first," the young Italian driver remarked during the media session.
Despite his undeniable passion for racing on the African continent, Hamilton maintained a pragmatic approach, emphasizing that sustaining competitive physical fitness and delivering strong on-track results will dictate his ultimate timeline in the premier class.
"I have to keep fighting to try and stay fit if I can, if I can still punch out good results over the next year, we'll keep it going," added the Briton, who made his Grand Prix debut back in the 2007 season.
The realization of an African Grand Prix marks the culmination of years of advocacy by Hamilton, who has held countless strategic meetings with key stakeholders, Formula 1 management, and various government leaders across the continent to champion the initiative.
