A magical moment unfolded at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez as Lewis Hamilton etched a brilliant new chapter into his legendary career by securing his maiden pole position for Scuderia Ferrari at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
This remarkable achievement broke Ferrari's pole drought for the season and marked his first pole position since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. In doing so, the British icon became Formula 1's fifth-oldest polesitter at 41 years and 297 days old, slotting neatly between Mario Andretti and Nigel Mansell in the all-time records.
The battle for supremacy reached a fever pitch during the dying seconds of the session. Mercedes contender George Russell had briefly snatched provisional pole away from Charles Leclerc with a blistering final run. However, Hamilton fired back instantly with a fractionally faster opening sector to snatch the top spot away by a minuscule 0.009 seconds.

"Oh man, I'm lost for words. It feels special to be in Mexico and get my first pole with Ferrari, and number 105. I like that number," Hamilton expressed emotionally after stepping out of his red charger.
The triumph was made even more staggering considering the hurdles he faced earlier in the weekend. A power unit issue during Friday practice severely limited his track time to just 13 laps in FP2. Despite starting on the back foot without proper long-run simulations, precise overnight setup adjustments by the engineering crew paid off handsomely on the high-altitude, low-grip asphalt.
"It's been a really, really tough, challenging weekend. Obviously, in FP1 we had an aerodynamic rake running, and we obviously then had the engine issue we had yesterday, which meant that we were just on the back foot. I didn't get to do a long run, but we've done a really good job with the setup over the weekend," he reflected.
Asked about his incredible longevity and joining elite company as one of the oldest polesitters in F1 history, Hamilton emphasized that his passion for motorsport remains as fierce as ever. He credited his relentless drive to a deep-seated love for racing and unwavering global support.
"Oh man, when there's a will, there's a way. It's all in the mind. I do all those different things that you can do to try and keep yourself young and fit. But I love what I do, and that love is not gone. I wake up every day thinking about it. I dream about it, and I've got this amazing support around the world that these guys keep me going," he concluded.
