Milan has its own way of welcoming the 2026 Italian Grand Prix weekend. Amid the roar of Formula 1 engines set to echo from the Monza circuit, Lego is heating up the city center with a unique tribute to F1 legend Michael Schumacher.
At the Arco della Pace in Piazza Sempione, the Danish company unveiled a giant mosaic inspired by the Icons Ferrari F2004 and Schumacher set. The colossal artwork measures 3 meters wide and 1.8 meters tall, consists of nearly 85,000 Lego bricks, and—what makes it special—is being assembled collectively by visitors to the play area, piece by piece, under the watchful eye of its creator, Riccardo Zangelmi.
The play area was officially inaugurated on Thursday evening, September 3, with two well-known figures: Linus, a Radio Deejay icon, and Carlo Vanzini, Sky Sport F1 commentator. They shared stories and memories of the seven-time world champion and his era of success with Ferrari in the early 2000s.
The mosaic will continue to be built over the race weekend. The schedule is Friday, September 4 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. At night, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Lego will project a tribute video to Schumacher every 30 minutes on three giant brick-shaped screens. A fitting way to celebrate 30 years since Schumacher's arrival at Ferrari, back in the now-distant 1996.
But that's not all. In the Fan Zone at the Monza circuit, Lego has opened the "Home of Lego F1," displaying the front wing and 1:1 scale steering wheel of the Ferrari SF-24—the car used in the drivers' parade at the 2025 Miami GP—plus two giant helmets visitors can enter to play. Meanwhile, at Palazzo dell'Arengario in Monza's city center as part of FuoriGP, Lego F1 helmets of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are on display, along with a play area for younger fans.
This initiative shows how Lego is not only celebrating modern F1 but also reviving nostalgia for one of the most emotional eras in the sport's history. For any tifosi in Milan or Monza this weekend, stop by—who knows, you might even get to place a brick on the mosaic dedicated to the Kaiser.
