Iker Lecuona suffered another defeat to Nicolo Bulega in Race 1 at the French WorldSBK, but the Spaniard insists the red flag robbed him of a real chance to fight for victory.

The two teammates battled from the start, and even after Bulega took the lead, Lecuona stayed within a second. However, a red flag for Tommy Bridewell's crash halted the race, and on the restart, Bulega pulled away to win by three seconds.

Lecuona believes the stoppage came at the worst possible time, cutting short the phase where he felt he had the advantage.

A Lost Opportunity at Magny-Cours

“Honestly, I need to say I had bad luck with that red flag because it's true that Nicolo has more with the new tyre at the beginning of the race like always, but like always with used tyres I feel stronger,” Lecuona told WorldSBK.com.

Before the red flag, he had posted his best lap time and recovered almost three-tenths in the final sector. “I don't know if I win or not without the red flag, but for sure it would be more close,” he added.

Bulega's win at Magny-Cours was his 24th of the 2026 season, a pace that even impressed Lecuona, who admitted seeing 1m35.2s on his dashboard was a shock.

Homework Ahead Before Cremona

Lecuona acknowledged the gap with new tyres. “We still miss that few tenths with a new tyre; with a used tyre we are there. We need to understand why, and maybe from Cremona we start to move the bike just to have something new and to take the data,” he explained.

Despite the loss, he was satisfied with managing the gap to Sam Lowes. “It's not easy to finish second in that case. Happy and let's see for tomorrow if we can find something,” he concluded.
