Charles Leclerc is facing a tense wait ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver has revealed that the ADUO-2 power unit damaged in his Monza crash is still being inspected. If it cannot be saved, he will have to take a new engine and incur a grid penalty in Baku.
The incident occurred on lap two of the Italian GP, when Leclerc was involved in contact with Michele Alboreto? Wait, the name Alboreto appears in the original report, but the context is another driver. Ferrari endured a nightmare weekend at Monza, and now the shadow of a penalty hangs over them.
“As far as I know, they are still checking the engine. We'll see. I don't know yet, but if we could save it, it would be fantastic. Otherwise, we will probably face a penalty at some point,” Leclerc said, as quoted by FormulaPassion.

Ferrari find themselves in a difficult position. The ADUO-2 power unit is the latest specification developed in Maranello, and losing it would be a significant blow, especially at Baku where top speed is crucial. Leclerc is well aware that this engine is vital to compete with Mercedes, who have been strong recently.
“The car is competitive in the race, we just need to find a way to unlock more performance in qualifying. In my opinion, performance management is even harder on Saturday than Sunday, and that's why we don't have immediate solutions. But anything we can do to try to gain a bit of performance on Saturday would be very helpful for our race result,” he added.
If the ADUO-2 can be salvaged, Ferrari have a chance to boost their performance in Baku. In Madrid, this evolution engine showed an advantage in power delivery, with Lewis Hamilton gaining around two tenths compared to Leclerc. That is a clear indication of its potential.
However, if the engine must be replaced, Leclerc will certainly start from the back or receive a grid penalty. This would be a severe blow to his ambitions in Azerbaijan. Ferrari must make a decision quickly before free practice begins.
Clearly, the pressure is now on Ferrari's technical team. They must work overtime to ensure Leclerc can run without a penalty, or at least minimise the impact. Because in Baku, races can be highly dynamic and grid penalties often kill podium chances.
