Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies has responded positively to the claim made by George Russell identifying the Milton Keynes-based squad as the team to beat in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. This assessment follows a stellar run of form by Max Verstappen, who secured his first victory of the season at Sepang before dominating both the Sprint and main Grand Prix events under the lights in Singapore.
The consecutive victories have completely altered the competitive landscape of the 2026 grid. While much of the paddock previously regarded Mercedes as the undisputed benchmark for the majority of the year, Red Bull's recent resurgence has firmly thrust them back to the forefront of the championship battle, showcasing supreme pace across vastly different circuit layouts.
Addressing Russell's remarks after the Marina Bay weekend, Mekies did not dispute the observation but maintained a cautious and analytical approach. He emphasized that recent data confirms the team possessed the ultimate race pace when it mattered most, which bodes well for their competitiveness as the championship travels to remaining venues with diverse technical demands.

However, the Red Bull boss was quick to highlight the volatile nature of the current F1 season, noting how previous front-runners like McLaren and Mercedes experienced fluctuating fortunes after strong periods. Consequently, extracting maximum performance during every single race weekend remains an absolute necessity if the team wishes to sustain its winning momentum.
Crucially, Mekies also confirmed a strategic pivot regarding the team's development trajectory, noting that their major upgrade programme for the current campaign has concluded as resources shift toward the 2027 project. This opens the door for competitors to potentially close the gap, though maximizing technical learnings from the 2026 car remains a primary internal objective for the squad.
