Formula 1, Sportrik Media - McLaren driver Lando Norris delivered a stunning final lap to claim pole position for the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Meanwhile, title rival Oscar Piastri, also from McLaren, endured a tough qualifying, finishing eighth. This Saturday, October 25, 2025, session highlighted Norris's dominance, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton securing second and third.
In Q3, Leclerc initially led with a remarkable 1m15.991, gaining seven-tenths from Q2. Norris was provisional second, 0.179 seconds off, followed by Hamilton in third. Crucially, Verstappen and Piastri occupied fourth and fifth after the opening laps. The pressure mounted on the McLarens and Verstappen to unseat Leclerc, while Hamilton eyed a front-row start.

Piastri briefly climbed to third but, as the first frontrunner to complete his final lap, slipped down as others improved. He ended eighth but advances to seventh due to Carlos Sainz's five-place penalty. Norris conjured six-tenths for a 1m15.586 to snag pole by nearly three-tenths. Ferrari responded with Leclerc ahead of Hamilton in second and third, as George Russell bumped Verstappen to fifth.
Kimi Antonelli, Sainz, Piastri, Isack Hadjar, and Oliver Bearman rounded out the top 10. This vital pole boosts Norris's championship hopes amid Piastri's struggles.
Q2 saw Piastri's opening lap a full second slower than Norris at the top, using used soft tires. Heading into final laps, Piastri teetered in 10th, with Antonelli at risk in 14th. Antonelli advanced, but Piastri dropped to 13th before surging to seventh, still nearly five-tenths behind his teammate.
Piastri's progression ousted Yuki Tsunoda in 11th, joined by Esteban Ocon, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso, and Liam Lawson. Norris topped Q2 at 1m16.252, over two-tenths clear of Hamilton in second.
Qualifying opened with focus on Piastri after a dismal final practice, where he reported a DRS issue post-first lap. Quickly fixed, he advanced to Q2. Antonelli faced elimination pressure, jumping to 11th but falling to 15th—enough for progression.
Bortoleto, Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly, and Franco Colapinto were Q1 casualties. Remarkably, Hadjar led with 1m16.733, just 0.003 seconds ahead of Hamilton.
Norris's pole offers a strategic edge for Sunday's race on October 26, 2025, at 14:00 local time, while Piastri battles from mid-pack. Verstappen in fifth also faces work, but Piastri's shocking result opens doors for Norris to close the gap. Sportrik's detailed analysis underscores tire management and pit strategy as keys on this high-altitude circuit.
