Lando Norris Slams MCL40 as Impossible After Singapore F1 GP Struggles
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Norris isn’t hoping a change in fortune for McLaren in the coming races

Lando Norris finished fourth at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix after enduring a punishing weekend at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The British driver openly criticized the MCL40 for lacking sufficient pace and being completely impossible to drive comfortably across the 62 laps of scorching asphalt. These ongoing balance and speed limitations have seen the Woking-based squad slip backward into the chasing pack during this fiercely competitive campaign.

Following back-to-back victories on either side of the summer break, McLaren and the reigning world champion have seemingly lost ground relative to the front-runners. Throughout the Singapore weekend, Norris never possessed the genuine pace required to fight the likes of race winner Max Verstappen and the Ferraris. He ultimately took the chequered flag in fourth place, finishing a massive 40 seconds adrift of the dominant Dutchman.

Looking ahead to the upcoming triple-header and races at Austin and Mexico, Norris believes his team remains a long way off the pace needed to challenge for victories. Speaking to media including Motorsport Week, he detailed how treacherous the MCL40 has become to pilot recently, describing the experience as driving on a knife-edge through every single corner. The unforgiving nature of the car demands absolute precision and relentless physical and mental exertion from the driver.

“The car is not quick enough and it’s too difficult to drive. We’re a long way off,” Norris told media including Motorsport Week. He elaborated that drivers cannot afford any margin for error and must force the car through every phase of a corner without relying on the chassis to do any natural work. “You’ve got to drive it in a way that takes so much concentration and so much ability. It’s just so long and mentally draining because of how hard you have to work behind the wheel.”

This severe drivability hurdle makes stringing together clean qualifying laps an immense challenge, stripping away the magic of past pole positions. Norris emphasized that no amount of cockpit heroics can compensate for a baseline deficit in pure speed. As the championship heads toward the Circuit of the Americas, Norris currently sits sixth in the 2026 drivers’ standings.
