Gwen Lagrue, the architect of Mercedes' junior programme who nurtured names like Kimi Antonelli, has officially completed his final assignment at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He now prepares for a new chapter as Red Bull Junior Programme director in 2027, a move that shakes the talent development landscape in the paddock.

In a heartfelt farewell message on social media, Lagrue reflected on 11 seasons with the Brackley-based team. He called Budapest his last Grand Prix with Mercedes, closing a decade-plus of dedication that not only produced champions but also shaped the characters of young drivers.

“Every dream needs a team. A few years ago, those five words became part of the Mercedes story. Today, they mean something even more personal,” Lagrue wrote. The figure who once worked closely with George Russell and Esteban Ocon stressed that his greatest pride was not just titles, but the journey of the juniors he mentored.
