As the lights went out at Aragon this weekend, Pol Espargaro once again filled the seat left vacant by Maverick Vinales at Red Bull KTM Tech3. But beneath his solid performance lies an irony the Austrian factory cannot hide: Espargaro's presence is a hidden 'loss' for their 850cc development programme.
Since retiring from full-time racing at the end of 2023, Espargaro has become KTM's most valuable asset in their test team. His pace when testing new components is even said to surpass that of Dani Pedrosa, who retired almost eight years ago. He has also been the go-to 'firefighter' when regular riders are injured, as seen with Vinales' shoulder injury in Germany last year.
Now, Vinales' shoulder injury has flared up again, forcing him to miss Silverstone and Aragon. Espargaro has been called up once more to ride for Tech3. But with MotoGP's technical revolution arriving in 2027, every day Espargaro spends at a race circuit is a lost day for developing the 850cc machine set to debut in less than a year.
KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer candidly expressed this dilemma. "It's so sad that first it took [Vinales' shoulder] so long to heal, then the screw was coming out and irritated some other pieces. Now there is another ligament injured and nobody can tell me at the moment when this happened," he told the MotoGP world feed during FP2 at Aragon.
Beirer stressed that KTM will not force Vinales to return before he is fully fit. "We are waiting for Maverick to be back. He is one of us and we want him back. I'm so happy Pol [Espargaro] is jumping in, we all know this positive guy when he's jumping in the project," he said. "Also we need him to continue working on the 850cc. So, we don't enjoy having Pol here and having Maverick at home – we need Maverick here and Pol in the test programme."
Beirer's statement reveals KTM's shifting priorities. With new technical regulations set to reshape MotoGP, a strong early development phase will be key to starting the new era well. Espargaro's presence in the race garage provides stability, but the Austrian factory knows his greatest contribution lies on the test track, preparing the weapon for the future.
Vinales' absence is also a blow to Tech3 as they fight in the standings. However, it also gives Espargaro another chance to prove he still belongs on the grid, albeit in a different role. The question remains: how long can KTM afford this costly situation?
