Roope Korhonen makes no secret of his ambition. The Finnish driver has vowed to go all-out in pursuit of the WRC2 runner-up spot at Rally Sardinia, even though the title is already sealed by Robert Virves. "We'll drive as fast as we can," he told Rallit.fi.

Virves clinched the championship before Sardinia following the cancellation of Rally Saudi Arabia. The Skoda driver is now uncatchable at the top of the standings. However, attention shifts to the fierce battle behind him: Roope Korhonen and Teemu Suninen are both eyeing second place.

Currently, France's Yohan Rossel holds second with 85 points, but the Lancia driver will not compete in Sardinia. Korhonen has 79 points, while Suninen has 76. Despite trailing, Suninen's results record this season is stronger, making the fight even more intriguing.

Korhonen himself is pleased to be back on the start line after the break following Rally Finland. "The championship was not in our hands anyway, but it's nice to be back racing. There was a bit of a break after Finland, and I have to admit in testing I didn't quite get going as I should have at first," he said.

He added that the team had a successful test session. "I haven't competed on this side of the island before, but the stages towards Olbia are familiar. In principle, there is still a battle with Teemu for second place. We'll drive as fast as we can and try to be in the fight for victory. That is the goal, at least."

Sardinia is known as one of the roughest rallies, especially on tyres. The risk of punctures always looms. "Although it's not as hot as in summer, I think the rally will be tough on tyres. It's difficult to say, but perhaps this is not among the worst events in that respect. The rally is fairly slow, though, and there is a lot of loose sand," Korhonen explained.

He hopes the positive trend in tyre durability shown this year continues. "Our tyres have held up quite well this year. Hopefully that trend continues," he concluded.
