Kimi Antonelli Targets Clean Start from Second Row in Mexico

The high-stakes championship weekend for Kimi Antonelli at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez presented a fresh tactical challenge after the young charger wrapped up the Mexico City Grand Prix qualifying in fifth place. While the initial result fell short of his ultimate expectations, the Mercedes hopeful inherited the fourth starting slot on the grid following a grid penalty handed to Max Verstappen over an earlier practice incident involving Liam Lawson.

Reflecting on a competitive session where Lewis Hamilton secured his maiden pole position with Ferrari, the Italian driver pointed out the thermal grip issues that hindered his pursuit higher up the timesheets. A drop in track temperature caught out his tire management, leading to costly mistakes through the opening two sectors of the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez layout during Q3.

"I struggled with the tires in Q3, the first run was very difficult," Antonelli admitted when discussing his qualifying hurdles. "With the temperature dropping, I struggled a bit with the compound, and the lap wasn't great. I made many mistakes especially in the first sector, but also in the second one."

Despite lining up on the second row for Sunday's showdown, the squad managed to bank an extra set of fresh tires. This strategic cushion could prove vital down the lengthy 800-meter run toward the braking zone of the opening corner, where track positioning and accident avoidance will dictate the early narrative of the race.

"It will be very important to make a good start and stay out of trouble at turn one, but we have also saved an extra set of tires and we will try to make the most of it right from the start," Antonelli concluded as preparations ramp up for the lights out.
