Kimi Antonelli Secures Front Row Start at Interlagos After Overcoming Wet Weather Drama

Kimi Antonelli faced a steep learning curve during a treacherous qualifying session at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos. Having shown blistering pace during Friday's practice sessions, the Italian rookie looked poised to challenge for the ultimate spot on the grid before changing weather conditions completely reshuffled the competitive order.

Torrential downpours hit the Sao Paulo circuit, forcing the newly crowned world champion to master the challenging wet asphalt of Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos for the very first time in his career. Driving for Mercedes, he adopted a cautious yet calculated approach to safely navigate through the Q1 and Q2 elimination phases without taking unnecessary risks.

Despite suffering a major scare and nearly sliding off the track at Turn 5 while struggling with intermediate tires, he managed to salvage a strong third place in the final qualifying shootout, finishing behind pacesetter Lando Norris.

Following post-qualifying grid penalties applied to rival drivers, the talented youngster was promoted to the front row for the main race. Reflecting on the intense session, he admitted that the unpredictable conditions pushed his adaptability to the limit.

"It was a very tricky qualifying session and I honestly didn't know what to expect since I had never driven here in the wet," Kimi Antonelli explained. "To be honest, I struggled a bit on intermediate tires and made a big mistake, nearly going off track at Turn 5. But it was still enough for third place, so I am happy with that, and now our full focus shifts to tomorrow," he concluded.
